Hiking in Pyrenees with Meredith :
Your host, Meredith, is a mountaineer, skier, climber, cyclist and historian
who has been here for 25 years; she will be able to advise you.
The Haute Ariege offers renowned challenges for cyclists, and the Corniche Route
is part of the “Classic Cols” challenge.
Or dare our race, L’Ariégeoise, it is mountainous! In addition, there are 5 mountainous stages of the Tour de France to bike , from home. There are more mountain lakes, and also more varieties of wild orchids, in the Haute Ariege than in all the other departments of France! The Plateau de Beille, (visible from the kitchen), offers the highest resort dedicated to cross-country skiing in France.
Meredith loves sharing her heaven. Old stones and new wood, craggy beams, precious furniture and a cheery fire make it rustic, warm and elegant. Under truly American care, rooms have fine linens, oriental rugs and books. The welcome is genuine, breakfast is fresh and generous, dinners are animated and delicious. Walkers and cyclists should stay a week, and there’s a repair room specially for bikes
For historians of architecture, Axiat and the Route des Corniches are part
of a circuit of Romanesque chapels and small churches;
a dozen are located between 5min and 1h from the house. Finally, relax at the Bains du Couloubret , (20min), the largest, warmest and most recently renovated thermal baths in the Pyrenees: 700m of Well-being.
